New Wilmington, PA - It is hard not to get a college basketball coach to talk following a game. When frustrations are running deep sometimes it becomes hard to get a college coach to say anything. In the case of Geneva College′s women′s basketball team and head coach Renee Drake, there is not much left to say. Geneva dropped a 61-47 decision at Westminster on Wednesday night to fall to 8-16 on the season with its fifth loss in a row and the tenth loss in the last 11 games. "There is really not much to say," said Drake. "We talk about defensive rebounding and limiting turnovers especially on the road and we were not able to accomplish either initiative tonight." Geneva allowed 21 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 21 times in the 14 point loss to the Titans.
Falling behind by as many as 16 points in the second half, Geneva did manage to make a run and get the deficit back into single digits but were never able to make a serious threat. "I was proud at the way our ladies didn′t quit," said Drake. "I don′t believe anyone has quit on this season and it showed in the effort of our players tonight. We just aren′t getting the results we are hoping for in the second half of the season."
Geneva trailed by only five points at the half but was outscored 33-24 in the final 20 minutes of the game. The Golden Tornadoes saw their long distance shooting let them down on Wednesday night. Connecting on only 3-23 from three-point range, Geneva′s Beth DeLuca and Christine Carugati combined to shoot just 1-14 from long distance. Alyse Scarsella led Geneva with 16 points and eight rebounds on 8-13 shooting from the field. Leah Prisuta was the only other player to reach double figures with ten points.
The Golden Tornadoes will try to end the 2010-11 campaign on a positive not when they host Waynesburg University in the season finale on Saturday night at 5:30 pm. Christine Carugati and Valerie Hamilton will be recognized as the only two senior players closing out their respective careers for Geneva College.
