The Office of Career Development is providing a variety of events and activities this semester through the Backpack to Briefcase program. The focus of the program is helping students with professional development and transitioning from college to a career. Events include a series of financial and job search workshops, as well as seminars for writing résumés and cover-letters and compiling e-portfolios. There are also job interview seminars, career advising and graduate school preparation services.

The career development office kicked off a three-part financial workshop series on January 26 with the first installment, "Money: Why Don't I Ever Have Enough?" Patty Peterson of PNC Bank spoke to students about examining their faith and finances.

The second part, "Personal Finance 201: Debt: How Will I Manage It?" takes place on Wednesday, February 16 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Benedum Room. The Geneva College financial aid staff will talk about student loan repayment, loan consolidation and how to manage repaying several different types of student loans. Consumer debt will also be discussed.

The final part of the series is "Personal Finance 301: Retirement Planning: How Will I Finance My Future?" It is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Benedum Room. Curt Knotick of Accurate Solutions Group will share his wisdom about planning for retirement: why it's important to think about it now and what steps can be taken to plan ahead.

Because professional and career development is a process rather than a destination, the office encourages students to begin looking toward their calling and career as early as their freshmen year. Career development services are open to prospective students and alumni as well. Director of Career Development Rob Rostoni says, "We highly recommend you think of your career and professional development as a four-year process while at Geneva. You can get connected now."

Some other upcoming Backpack to Briefcase events include a Student and Alumni Career Networking Event on Wednesday, February 9 and a WestPACS Jobs & Internship Fair on March 23. For the full spring semester schedule and more information on these and other career development programs, see the Calendar of Events.
