Dispossessed by Elizabeth Asche Douglas

Geneva College Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts and Humanities Elizabeth Asche Douglas has been invited to participate in an exhibit honoring the late Samuel Rosenberg at the American Jewish Museum in Pittsburgh.

Rosenberg was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University for 40 years and at the Young Men & Women′s Hebrew Association for 39 years. As a former painting student of Rosenberg′s, Douglas can see his teaching style exemplified in her own. "He always expected our best," she says, "and was firm in his existence on the highest order of craftsmanship and deepest integrity of content, yet his criticisms were always given with kind personal concern for each of us as individual."

Douglas′ featured works are entitled Dispossessed, a pastel piece and reflection of the biblical parable of the wise and foolish virgins, and Bakuba Mask, an interpretation of an African bronze helmet mask from the Cleveland Museum of Art, done on canvas with ultrachrome inks and acrylic paint. "Having two of my paintings selected for inclusion in the American Jewish Museum's exhibition, ‘A Painter's Legacy: The Students of Samuel Rosenberg,′ is a single honor," she says. "As I look at the roster of distinguished artists, some of whom have attained international acclaim, I am both honored and humbled."

"A Painter′s Legacy: The Students of Samuel Rosenberg" began Feb. 7 and will run through April 30, 2011 in the American Jewish Museum in Pittsburgh. All events are free and open to the public. Click here for times and details.
