Geneva College Henry Mancini Musical Theatre AwardsThe Geneva College Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards steps onto the national stage this year, becoming a Participating Award Program of the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) held annually in New York City. Since 1994, Geneva has honored the best and brightest stars from high school musical productions in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties, inviting students from selected area schools to perform at a ceremony and presenting awards for excellence. Beginning this year, the winners of "best actor" and "best actress" at Geneva′s Mancini Awards will receive further national recognition by performing on Broadway at the NHMSTA.

"This is a great opportunity for enrichment for these young performers," says Professor of Music Louise Copeland. "The students will spend an entire week working with performing arts professionals and then participate in an end-of-the-week performance with all the other students attending the NHSMTA."

Participating Awards Programs each send a best actor and best actress recipient to the NHSMTA. Geneva will send two students, all expenses paid, to rehearse, attend private and master classes with theater professionals, and reside at New York University from June 22-28, 2011. While there, they will have the opportunity to earn merit scholarships, obtain professional advancement and receive other prizes.

The third annual National High School Musical Theater Awards will be held at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway on June 27, 2011. Student performances will be featured and a panel of experts will present the Jimmyâ„¢ Award for the Best Performance by an Actress and the Best Performance by an Actor.

The NHSMTA was established in 2009 by the Pittsburgh CLO and Nederlander Alliances, LLC for the purpose of bringing national attention to the importance of the arts in school curriculum and recognizing school districts that offer musical theater study and produce quality student productions. Over 20 awards programs representing more than 1,000 high schools are currently involved. The NHSMTA has been recognized by The National Endowment for the Arts, The Broadway League, The Shubert Organization and other industry organizations and foundations committed to the future of the arts.
