Beaver Falls, PA - Hiram College brought a 9-1 record into Geneva′s softball home opener on Saturday. After a 9-1 victory over the Golden Tornadoes in game one of the doubleheader, it became very clear why the record was what it was. Enter senior hurler Ariel Lilly for the Golden Tornadoes in game two. Lilly posted a seven hit shut-out in the night cap as Geneva prevailed by the score of 2-0. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 8-6 on the young season.
Hiram broke open a 2-0 game with four runs in the fourth inning of game one. Geneva′s lone run came on an RBI ground out from Martha Adams in the fifth inning. Leah Prisuta was 3-3 in game one and reached base in all four plate appearances. Prisuta collected three of Geneva′s nine hits. The leadoff hitter reached base for Geneva in all but one inning and the Golden Tornadoes were an amazing 1-20 with runners in scoring position in game one.
Geneva didn′t need much offense in game two but Christina Fuqua provided the big blow with her first collegiate homer to lead off the third inning. Fuqua had two of Geneva′s six hits in the game. Leanne Abate added an RBI single in the sixth inning which was more than Lilly would need in the circle. With a complete game shut-out, Lilly allowed seven hits and struck out seven in grabbing her third victory of the season.
Geneva is scheduled to host Point Park on Tuesday before heading to Ursuline next Saturday afternoon.
