Waynesburg, PA - It was a long day of softball for Geneva College and Waynesburg University on Saturday afternoon. The two teams hooked up in an epic 13-inning battle in game one before having to complete the doubleheader in the night cap. The Golden Tornadoes prevailed in the 13 inning marathon by the score of 6-1 before dropping game two by the score of 6-4. The split pushed Geneva′s overall record to 25-11 to end the regular season. The Golden Tornadoes will now prepare to travel to Troutville, VA in two weeks to compete in the NCCAA national tournament for the first time in five years.

Waynesburg opened the scoring in game one with a first inning tally. The Yellow jackets would then be kept off the board for the next 12 innings. Ariel Lilly pitched the first four innings allowing just that one run. Julie DiLonardo took over in the fifth and allowed just two hits in her nine innings of relief work. In fact, DiLonardo at one point retired 17 consecutive batters. Geneva pushed across an unearned run in the third inning to tie the game and did not make any more offensive noise until the top of the 13th inning. Adriane Blake′s sacrifice fly broke the tie and successful squeeze bunts by Ashley Davis and Christina Fuqua added to the lead. Leanne Abate also provided an RBI double in the rally. Geneva banged out nine hits in the game including a pair off of the bat of Ashley Davis.

Waynesburg scored two runs in each of the first three innings of game two to build a 6-1 lead. Geneva tried to rally back in the final innings. Anjelica Marsh provided a two-run double in the sixth to pull within a run and Leah Prisuta scored on an error in the seventh to get within 6-4. The Golden Tornadoes put the tying runs on base in the final frame but could not complete the comeback. Seniors Adriane Blake, Leanne Abate and Anjelica Marsh each had two hits in the night cap to lead the offense. DiLonardo pitched four innings of scoreless relief in game two but Geneva′s offense could not take advantage in the final innings.

Geneva will find out its post-season fate when the NCCAA national seeds are announced on May 8th.
