Last week, Geneva College′s Chemistry Club presented its yearly "Big Kablooey," an hour-and-a-half demonstration of chemical reactions and explosions. Advised by Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Kerry McMahon, students organized over 15 chemical reactions while the campus community filled the largest classroom in the Science and Engineering Building.

Complete with explosive volcanoes, color changing handkerchiefs, expanding marshmallow peeps, manufactured clouds and more, the Chemistry Club delivered an afternoon of chemistry-related entertainment. Students performed experiments using vacuum chambers, liquid nitrogen, phosphorus and other elements. And not only did attendees see chemistry in action, they also tasted it in marshmallows and oranges frozen in liquid nitrogen.

The Chemistry Club is led by President Sam Shouse, Vice President Cally Cooper, Treasurer Nick Greenfield and Secretary Karena Gregg. Students invest time and energy in the event for several different reasons. Cooper shared, "It′s my passion to teach chemistry. The whole event stimulates passion about chemistry in people."

Nick Greenfield said, "We hope that everyone is able to appreciate the greater world of chemistry after attending this event. It′s the most exciting thing people can go to if they are excited about learning."
