Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College volleyball team is less than two weeks away from reporting for pre-season camp in anticipation of the 2011 season. The Golden Tornadoes will be hard pressed to duplicate their record breaking 26-5 season a year ago. As impressive as the work was for Geneva on the court, it may have been more impressive in the classroom. Just this week, the Golden Tornadoes were among 480 other schools to be recognized by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) as Team Academic Award Winners.

The award is handed out to those schools that maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative team GPA. The 2011 class is the largest ever to be recognized for academic excellence. The 481 schools are up from only 62 that were recognized in the first year of the award in 1992. "A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the 2011 AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court."

Geneva′s volleyball team in particular had six members recognized for academic excellence within the Presidents′ Athletic Conference and a total of seven recognized with a Geneva College Athletic Director′s Academic Award. "We strive to have our student-athletes succeed in everything that they do," said co-head coach Wendy Smith. "These awards are simply a testament to the hard work that our ladies put in to both their studies and the hard work they give on the court."
