Beaver Falls, PA - The new athletic season for Geneva College opened up on the first day of September with the men′s and women′s cross country teams hosting a meet at Brush Creek Park against PAC foes Thiel, Westminster and Waynesburg. The Golden Tornadoes opened their season with a pair of second place finishes as the men came in second behind Thiel College and the women placed second behind Waynesburg.

Despite missing a couple of its key members to injuries, the women′s cross country team managed a second place finish. The star of the day turned out to be freshman Heidi Steiner (Alliance, OH), who was making her collegiate debut for the Golden Tornadoes. Steiner won the individual prize for first place in helping lead the Golden Tornadoes to their second place team finish. Steiner crossed the line in a time of 21:49 on the 5K course, which was 17 seconds better than the next closest competitor. Shannon Rech turned in a fourth place finish with a time of 22:25. Other top performers for the Golden Tornadoes included Anna Kluitenberg (8), Samantha Miller (15) and Monica Boyer (21).

In men′s action, NCCAA national qualifier from a year ago Nick Edinger picked up where he left off in 2010 with a second place overall finish in the lid lifter of 2011. Edinger led the Golden Tornadoes to a second place overall finish in the first meet of the new year. Turning in a time of 17:21 Edinger edged out Steven Morgan from Thiel for second place. Thiel′s Richard Peterson won the meet for the second straight year turning in a course record 17:09.

Owen Struck finished fourth overall with a time of 17:37 while teammates Chuck Walters (7) and Charles Parker (8) also turned in top ten performances.

Geneva will not get much recovery time as both the men and women will travel to New Wilmington on Saturday to compete at Westminster College.
