Pittsburgh, PA - Geneva College and Carnegie Mellon University combined for 25 victories in men′s soccer in 2010. Opening the 2011 season against one another, it only seemed fitting that neither team went home a loser. The bad news however for both teams is that neither team picked up a victory. Geneva and CMU tied 2-2 after 110 minutes of action on Friday night.
While the 2-2 tie is a result that Geneva head coach Gary Dunda would be please with at the end of the day, the tie came following a 2-0 halftime lead that the Golden Tornadoes could not hold. Jake McCracken opened the scoring in the 26th minute when he followed his own penalty kick miss and was able to knock in the rebound for Geneva′s first goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Austin Petrie crossed a perfect corner kick onto the head of freshman Jeremy Troutman for his first collegiate goal.
The Golden Tornadoes were unable to hold the two goal advantage as CMU tallied its first goal three minutes into the second half and tied the score in the 73rd minute. Neither team was able to find the net the rest of the way, including a pair of ten minute overtime periods.
CMU came up with 15 shots in the game to Geneva′s 11, but junior goalkeeper Evan Biedenbach managed six saves in the tie to open the new season. "This is a very good to team we played," said head coach Gary Dunda. "I liked the way our guys competed and it certainly would have been a nice start to hold that lead but it gives us something to build on for the rest of the season."
Geneva will return to Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at 5 pm to face Otterbein College on the second day of the CMU Classic. The Golden Tornadoes open their home schedule on Tuesday night at 7 pm when they host Fredonia State.
