New Wilmington, PA - When a cross country coach uses the term dangerous heat, it may be time to stand up and take notice. Geneva College head cross country coach Brian Yowler reflected on Saturday′s meet at Westminster with those very words. "We were thrilled to get all of our student-athletes healthy and back on the bus after having to deal with some unbearable conditions." Despite those conditions and having to run just 48 hours after the season opener on Thursday, the Golden Tornadoes fared quite well in New Wilmington.
In men′s action, Geneva turned in a stellar performance with a fourth place overall finish that included wins over PAC foes Grove City, Westminster, Waynesburg and Bethany. It was the first time since 2006 that a Geneva men′s team outdueled Grove City College. Leading the charge with a seventh place overall finish was Owen Struck′s 28:27 time on the 8K course. Teammate Nick Edinger finished 13th in a time of 28:49. Other impressive performances included Charles Walters (18), Charles Parker (32) and Nick Mansor (36). Geneva finished with 104 total points and a fourth place finish.
The women′s result was not nearly as impressive as what was turned in by the men; however, several key contributors were on the shelf for Saturday. Geneva finished tenth out of 16 schools with a total of 207 points. Freshman Heidi Steiner crossed the line in 20th position with a time of 25:37 on the 6K course. Shannon Rech finished 27th while Anna Kluitenberg was 45th and Emily Hoobler 46th to round out Geneva′s top 50 performers.
The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Waynesburg next Saturday morning after a week of recovery from a very taxing week of racing.
