Beaver Falls, PA - In a game that was originally scheduled for last Thursday that was postponed until Tuesday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes certainly made it worth the wait. Geneva cruised to a 10-0 victory over Penn State Beaver on Tuesday in a match played at Reeves Field because of wet conditions at Merriman Athletic Complex. The victory pushed Geneva′s early season record to 1-1 while the Lions are still in search of the program′s first win in just its second year as an intercollegiate program.
Geneva controlled the tempo and the field position for all 90 minutes as it out shot Penn State 43-0 including 23 shots on goal. Ten of those shots found the back of the net as the Golden Tornadoes′ rebounded from their 2-0 season opening loss to Pitt-Bradford.
Maura Allen opened the scoring for Geneva in just the second minute of the game. It was the first of three goals for Allen as she was one of four Geneva players to register multiple goal afternoons. Rebecca Shaw found the net twice as did teammates Julie Collins and Rhetta King. For King, she scored her first two collegiate goals. Although freshman goalkeeper Sara Mittner was not tested with any shots, she did register her first college victory and shut-out.
Geneva found the net three times in the first half before exploding for seven second half goals to put the match away.
The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they welcome Mt. Aloysius to Merriman Complex for a 4:30 pm kickoff. Geneva will host Medialle on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
