Beaver Falls, PA - No student-athlete at Geneva College was eligible to receive player of the week honors from the Presidents′ Athletic Conference for the past four years. Because of Geneva′s NCAA Division III provisional status, individual accolades were not allowed to be handed out to any Golden Tornadoes′ student-athletes. All that changed last week when freshman goalkeeper Bryan Butler became the school′s first PAC player of the week when he was awarded the men′s soccer defensive player of the week honor for the first week of the regular season.
Butler got his first collegiate start in the net for Geneva last Saturday evening and it turned out to be a match he won′t soon forget. Making four saves on the night, Butler picked up his first career victory along with his first career shut-out in a 1-0 victory over Otterbein College.
The Golden Tornadoes have opened the regular season with an overall record of 1-1-1 after dropping a 2-0 decision to Fredonia State on Tuesday night. Butler is splitting time with junior goalkeeper Evan Biedenbach in the early season, who was in goal on Tuesday. Butler is scheduled to make his second start on Saturday night when Geneva hosts Penn State Altoona at Merriman Complex beginning at 7 pm.
