Geneva Takes Two PAC Matches in Home Opener

Beaver Falls, PA - After playing its first five matches on the road, the Geneva College women′s volleyball team finally got to play a match on its home court. In fact, the Golden Tornadoes played a pair of matches at Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday and came away with a pair of PAC victories over Grove City 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19) and Waynesburg 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-13). The victories pushed Geneva′s overall record to 5-2 including a perfect 3-0 mark in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference.

Geneva opened the day a bit on the sluggish side by dropping the first game of the day to Grove City 25-23. The Golden Tornadoes managed to right the ship and win the final three games of the match. Kristland McCracken led a fierce offensive attack with a team best 21 kills in the victory over Grove City. Maggie Bowersox (14 kills), Ashley Davis (12 kills) and Rachel Kuegler (11 kills) each finished with double digit numbers at the net. The conductor of Geneva′s efficient offense was once again sophomore setter Deanna Briody. She finished the first match of the day with an impressive 62 assists while senior libero Brianna Mixter led the defense with 33 digs.

Geneva dominated play from start to finish in the night cap with an impressive three-game sweep over Waynesburg. Bowersox led the charge in the second match with nine kills while only playing in the first two games. Teammate Kristland McCracken also sat out game three following a seven kill effort in the match. Briody put up 27 assists against Waynesburg in the victory.

Geneva heads to the road on Tuesday night as it visits New Wilmington to take on both Westminster and Chatham in a pair of conference tilts. The Golden Tornadoes don′t return home until September 29th for a date with Saint Vincent College.
