Marietta, OH - The Geneva College women′s volleyball team dropped four consecutive matches at the Hiram College Invitational last weekend. It appears as though a bit of rest may have paid off in a big way for the Golden Tornadoes. After having five days away from the court, Geneva got back to work on Friday evening against Washington & Lee in the first match of the Marietta College Pioneer Classic. The Golden Tornadoes upended Washington & Lee 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23. The victory put an end to Geneva′s four match losing streak and even more impressively handed Washington & Lee its first loss of the season as it fell to 13-1 in 2011. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 8-6 with the victory.

Washington & Lee came into the tournament with a mark of 13-0 and had dropped only four games all year. On Friday night, the Golden Tornadoes dropped game one but quickly rallied to take the next three for the victory. Rachel Kuegler led the offense with 14 kills while Maggie Bowersox added 13 in the win. Ashley Davis picked up 12 kills including six throw downs on just seven swings in the decisive fourth game. It was a Bowersox kill that proved to be the final dagger for Washington & Lee.

Deanna Briody continued her strong play with 46 assists while Brianna Mixter led the defense with 29 digs. As a team, Geneva came up with 11 service aces with a team best three service winners from Emily Bestor.

Geneva will be right back in action at Marietta on Saturday with matches against John Carroll at 11 am and then with host Marietta at 1:15 pm. The Golden Tornadoes get back into conference play next Tuesday with a match at Thiel before returning home to face Saint Vincent next Thursday night at 7 pm.
