Beaver Falls, PA - The students at Geneva College may be missing some key hours of sleep with the way the men′s soccer team is playing in 2011. For the third time in four PAC matches, the Golden Tornadoes were forced to overtime and for the third time they found a way to put one in the win column. On Wednesday night, the Golden Tornadoes rallied back once again for a 2-1 victory over Bethany College in double overtime. The win was Geneva′s fourth straight and pushed its overall record to 10-3-1 including a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
As has become custom, the Golden Tornadoes fell behind early in the match as Bethany opened the scoring with a tally from Arkangelo James just five minutes into the match. The Bison held their lead into the second half when Ben Makin volleyed a ball out of the air and into the net for his first goal of the season to tie the match in the 59th minute. Neither team could get the go-ahead goal in regulation and through the first overtime session. With just over three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Jeb Nash′s corner kick bounced around in the box before Jon Mathoslah found it and snuck it over the goal line for the game winner.
After falling behind in total shots after the first half, the Golden Tornadoes came storming back and ended the game with a 26-17 edge in total shots. Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Butler improved to 6-1 on the season and managed to stop 12 shots in picking up the victory. Bethany′s Patrick Coleman was equally as impressive with 15 saves in the match.
The Golden Tornadoes head to Kentucky on Saturday for a showdown between the only two remaining undefeated teams in the PAC. Thomas More is also the defending PAC champions. Geneva returns home next Wednesday night for a match against Waynesburg.
