Beaver Falls, PA - In what was the final regular season home game for five seniors on the Geneva College men′s soccer team, the Golden Tornadoes held off Waynesburg University by the score of 3-1. While it may be the final regular season home game, it will most likely not be the final home game of the season as the Golden Tornadoes kept pace in the PAC to hold onto a solid grasp of second place with an overall record of 11-4-1 and a conference mark of 5-1. A first or second place finish in the regular season will assure the Golden Tornadoes at least one post-season home game in the first week of November.
Coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss at Thomas More in what was a first place showdown, the Golden Tornadoes used the senior night emotion to jump out to an early 1-0 lead and it was one of those seniors that broke the ice. David Harwood scored his second goal of the game in the 13th minute to get Geneva rolling. While the Golden Tornadoes seemed to control things for most of the match, Waynesburg was down by just one for what seemed like an eternity.
The Golden Tornadoes were finally able to extend the lead when Jeb Nash′s shot deflected off a Waynesburg defender into the net in the 67th minute. The Yellow Jackets were not dead yet as they responded with their only goal of the night with just less than five minutes left in regulation. Teddy Krzywiecki put the game out of reach with his third goal of the season with less than three minutes on the clock.
Evan Biedenbach was back in goal for Geneva and made six saves to register his fifth victory of the season. Geneva out shot Waynesburg 12-7 for the night including just four shots on goal.
The Golden Tornadoes will close out the regular season with road games at Grove City this Saturday and a match a Thiel one week later. The PAC tournament is set to begin on November 1st.
