Washington, PA - The Geneva College football team returned to Beaver Falls on Saturday evening licking its wounds after a 24-7 loss to Washington & Jefferson. The Golden Tornadoes hung on to the slimmest of leads for as long as they could but eventually wore down against a relentless President′s attack. The loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 2-6 and clinches only the fourth losing season in Geno DeMarco′s 19 year head coaching career. Geneva moved to 2-4 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference while W & J improved to 4-3 and 3-2 in league play. The Golden Tornadoes have dropped seven straight against Washington & Jefferson and haven′t walked away with a victory against the President′s since 1983.

The mood in the first half was much different as the Golden Tornadoes held W & J off the board despite favorable field position on its first six possessions. A fumble inside the red zone and an incomplete pass on a fourth down attempt kept the game scoreless in the first half. Geneva went off on a 13 play, 75 yard drive that culminated with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Zack Hayward to Corey O′Patchen to open the scoring. W & J quickly answered on the ensuing kickoff with a six play, 59 yard touchdown scoring drive. However, the extra point hit the right upright and Geneva took a 7-6 lead into the half.

The Golden Tornadoes did not run one play in W & J territory in the second half as the President′s finally were able to wear down Geneva on both sides of the ball. The President′s scored 17 second half points and ended the game with 24 unanswered points to get the victory.

Geneva managed just 83 yards rushing on 33 carries and 163 yards through the air on 9-22. Meanwhile, W & J posted 428 yards of total offense including 258 yards on the ground. Rocco Colavecchia led the Geneva rushing attack with 75 yards while Zack Hayward was 6-8 for 114 yards and a touchdown through the air.

On defense, Tucker Nuetzel and Scott Erb each finished the game with a team best ten tackles with Tyler French coming up with nine tackles and Geneva′s only sack of the game.

Geneva will return home next Saturday for the home finale to face a winless Thiel team in a 1 pm kickoff. Following a bye week, the Golden Tornadoes close out the 2011 campaign at Westminster on November 12th.
