Beaver Falls, PA - The largest senior class in Geneva College football history played its final home game of 2011 on Saturday. The group of 23 seniors now has a happy memory of their senior day send off following a 50-31 victory over Thiel at Reeves Field. The Golden Tornadoes moved to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the PAC while the Tomcats remained winless in dropping their 20th consecutive loss dating back to 2009.
The game opened with some serious fireworks as Julian McClean took the opening kickoff back 78 yards to the Geneva College one yard line where De′Von Drish scored from one play later. On the ensuing kickoff, Geneva′s AJ Delmonico made himself a senior day memory with an 80 yard touchdown return to tie the game. After a three and out on defense, it took Geneva just two plays to take the lead highlighted by a 27 yard Alex Mack from Zack Hayward touchdown connection that had the Golden Tornadoes on top 14-7 just three minutes into the game.
Rocco Colavecchia capped a 12 play, 95 yard scoring drive with a five yard touchdown and Alex Mack scored his second touchdown of the game on a seven yard hook-up from Hayward as the Golden Tornadoes took a 31-14 lead into halftime following the first of three Bryan Visingardi field goals.
Visingardi connected from 35, 37 and 38 yards on the afternoon. Corey O′Patchen caught a 39 yard pass from Colavecchia to extend Geneva′s lead in the third quarter. Colavecchia then scored on his second run of the game from three yards out for Geneva′s final touchdown of the game. It was the third time in the past six years that Geneva had reached the 50 point plateau for a game.
The Golden Tornadoes racked up 409 yards of total offense with the combination of Hayward and Colavecchia combining for 232 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Colavecchia also ended the day with a team high 110 yards on the ground on 22 carries.
Defensively, the Golden Tornadoes got ten tackles from Solomon Hejirika and an interception from Scott Erb in the second half.
The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy their only bye week of the season next Saturday before heading to Westminster for the season finale on November 12th.
