Mt. Vernon, OH - The Geneva College women′s volleyball team has been climbing the NCCAA mountain for several years in search of its first ever trip to the NCCAA national tournament. If it is to get there in 2011, it will have to be through an at-large bid as the Golden Tornadoes came up just short of an automatic bid after dropping a 3-2 decision to Malone University in the regional championship. The Golden Tornadoes opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the semi-final round but came up short in the finals. The victory over Mt. Vernon moved Geneva′s season long win streak to 13 games before it came to an end later in the day.

Geneva defeated Mt. Vernon by game scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 to begin the day. Kristland McCracken was one of three Geneva players to finish the match with double digit kill numbers. McCracken had 11 kills while Erin Smith and Rachel Kuegler had ten each on just 20 swings. Deanna Briody had 41 assists and Brianna Mixter added 24 digs in the semi-final victory.

In the championship, Geneva won the first game 25-19 before dropping games two and three 19-25 and 16-25. The Golden Tornadoes evened the match with a 25-23 win in game four before falling 15-8 in the decisive fifth game. Ashley Davis led the offense with 14 kills with Kristland McCracken finishing the match with 13. Kuegler and Maggie Bowersox each added ten kills in the loss. Briody had 52 assists and Mixter added 32 digs.

Geneva will have to wait to see if it did enough to warrant an at-large bid later in November when the field is set. As it stands now, the Golden Tornadoes will turn their attention to the PAC semi-finals which they will be hosting on Friday night at 6 pm.
