The students of Geneva College are being encouraged to participate in Free Speech Week (FSW) beginning today, October 17-23. The school is a partner organization of FSW, and is celebrating the freedom of speech through various class projects.
Professor of Communication and Public Relations Jeffery Schindel is helping to spearhead Geneva′s participation. Campus advertisement monitors are displaying ads created by Schindel encouraging students to recognize FSW. Professor Schindel explained, "Geneva plans to include an article about the event in The Geneva Cabinet, the student-led newspaper, this week. My PR students are writing letters to the editor regarding their views of the freedom of speech in the context of the Wall Street protests. It's a great learning experience for them." Schindel also helped advertise the event at this year′s Pennsylvania Communication Association Conference.
Communication major Benjamin Butler is one of several students participating in a free speech exercise by writing a letter to the editor of The Beaver County Times in regard to the Wall Street protests. Students were instructed to express their opinion on the situation. Butler said, "Basically, I am writing about how you should be responsible with your right to free speech. It′s good to examine what′s going on around you. "
Schindel is encouraging students to use their free speech wisely, remembering that as Christians, we are accountable to God for our words.
