Beaver Falls, PA - Dreams of participating in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference tournaments, as well has potentially hosting those events, have been running through the heads of coaches and student-athletes for the past four years. After suffering through four years of NCAA provisional status, the Golden Tornadoes are finally eligible for conference post-season play and two of those tournaments open up this week right here on College Hill.
The Geneva College men′s soccer team will be first up on Wednesday night when it hosts Grove City College in a PAC semi-final match at 7 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes finished the regular season with a 12-4-2 overall record and a mark of 6-1-1 within the PAC. Grove City finished with an identical 6-1-1 conference record but Geneva edged out the Wolverines for home field advantage based on goal differential. Geneva and Grove City battled to a 1-1 tie less than two weeks ago and will face off in Beaver Falls for the right to advance to the conference finals. Thomas More is the top seed in the men′s soccer field and will host Bethany College on Wednesday. Should Thomas More win its semi-final match, it would host the finals on Saturday. If the Bison pull off the upset then the winner of Geneva/Grove City would gain the right to host the championship match this Saturday.
The women′s volleyball team at Geneva College has been making history for the past two seasons. After setting a single season record for victories with 26 a year ago, the Golden Tornadoes were right back at it in 2011. Finishing the season with an overall record of 25-8, Geneva is just one victory shy of breaking last year′s single season mark. The volleyball team was also the first Geneva program to capture a PAC regular season title with an impressive 17-1 mark in conference play. That regular season title gave the Golden Tornadoes the right to host this weekend′s PAC semi-finals and finals. Geneva and Bethany received a first round bye and will begin play on Friday night in the semi-finals. Geneva will play the winner of Tuesday′s Thiel/Westminster quarter-final match in the first semi-final on Friday at 6 p.m. The night cap on Friday night will feature Bethany going up against the winner of Tuesday′s Thomas More/Saint Vincent showdown. The semi-final winners will meet at Geneva′s Metheny Fieldhouse this Saturday at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA Division III regional tournament.
