Center Valley, PA - Ironically it may have been the nicest and most comfortable conditions for the Geneva College cross country teams to run in on Saturday in the season finale. For the first time since becoming an active member in NCAA Division III, the Golden Tornadoes had an opportunity to compete at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. Hosted by DeSales, the Mideast Regional played host to 47 men′s and women′s program across the Eastern United States. Both Geneva teams held their own finishing in the middle of the pack in both races.
The women′s team posted a 26th overall position out of 47 schools with a total of 656 points. The Golden Tornadoes managed to finish just ahead of PAC schools Saint Vincent and Waynesburg with the third best score by a PAC school. Junior Shannon Rech placed 76th overall as the only Geneva runner to break the top 100 with a finishing time of 24:57 on the 6K course. Freshman Heidi Steiner was 128th overall with a time of 25:57. Rounding out Geneva′s top five was Emily Hoobler (131), Alayna Merkle (151) and Anna Kluitenberg (170). Johns Hopkins won the overall women′s meet with a score of 78 including three runners in the top ten.
In men′s action, the Golden Tornadoes posted a 27th overall finish with five runners finishing in the top 200 of the 316 runners. Junior Nick Edinger crossed the line first for Geneva with a 105th place spot in a time of 28:06 on the 8K course. Teammates Chuck Walters (121), Owen Struck (165), Nate Mansor (167) and Jacob Beschner (187) each turned in solid performances. Haverford College won the men′s meet with a point total of just 52 including two of the top four runners in the overall finish.
