Beaver Falls, PA - After experiencing a victory in the season opener on Tuesday night, the Geneva College women′s basketball team experienced its first loss on Thursday in the home opener. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a 64-52 decision to Ursuline College to fall back to 1-1 on the young season.
Ursuline led for most of the game with Geneva′s only lead coming late in the first half at 22-21. The Arrows led by as many as seven before the Golden Tornadoes battled back to take a short-lived lead. Ursuline ran off five straight points after Geneva grabbed the lead and never again relinquished control of the game. Leading by four points at the half, Ursuline outscored Geneva 36-28 in the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Tornadoes managed only ten field goals in the second half including 2-8 from three-point range. "We played with some inconsistency tonight," said first year head coach Lori Wynn. "We showed some good signs on the offensive end of the court but we just didn′t do enough to sustain any type of momentum."
Freshman Chelsea Kauffman led the Geneva offense with 12 points while Beth DeLuca and Chelsea D′Urso each chipped with ten points. Rachel Rouan scored nine of her 11 points in the second half to give Geneva four players with double digit scoring totals. Ursuline′s Laura Campbell led all scorers with 19 points.
"Our offense ran a bit more fluid in the second half but every time we would get a big basket, they (Ursuline) would come right back at us. We didn′t do nearly enough to win on the defensive end of the floor."
The difference in the game came from the Ursuline bench. The Arrows outscored Geneva′s bench by the count of 36-5. In addition to Campbell′s 19 off the bench, Ursuline got 12 points from Brooke Trauthwein as a reserve.
Geneva will go back to the road for the short trip to Penn State Beaver next Tuesday night. The Golden Tornadoes return to Metheny Fieldhouse a week from Saturday for a 1 pm matinee against Carlow University.
