Bethany, WV - There are many fundamental principles that need to be applied for a team to win basketball games. Whether it′s limiting offensive rebounds, protecting the basketball or simply playing hard-nosed defense, all are important elements to any game. First and foremost, however, must be the ability to put the ball in the basket and on Saturday the Geneva College women′s basketball team was unable to accomplish the most important ingredient in a 61-35 loss to Bethany College. The loss was the fifth straight for the Golden Tornadoes who dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference.
The first conference road test for Geneva did not start well as the Bison rushed out to a 15-1 lead before the Golden Tornadoes were able to connect on their first field goal 11 minutes into the game. Geneva made just four field goals in the first half and fell behind 29-14 at the break. Geneva′s offense picked up a little bit in the second half but was still outscored 32-21 in the final stanza in dropping the 26 point decision. Beth DeLuca was one of the bright spots for Geneva with her second career double-double with a team best 14 points and ten rebounds. Chelsea D′Urso was Geneva′s only other player to reach double figures with 12 points on 5-11 shooting.
Bethany (3-3, 2-0) featured a balanced attack to showcase a total of nine different players posting points on the statistic sheet. Taylor Verrico led the Bison with 13 points in the victory.
The Golden Tornadoes will seek their first conference victory while trying to end their five game losing skid on Wednesday night when they host Waynesburg University at Metheny Fieldhouse at 5:30 pm. Geneva will travel to Grove City next Saturday in the before a two week lay-off that will lead the Golden Tornadoes into the Big Easy Classic in New Orleans on December 29-30.
