Beaver Falls, PA - It had been over a month since the Geneva College men′s basketball team had played on its home floor. During its absence from Metheny Fieldhouse, the Golden Tornadoes dropped four of five and brought a four game losing streak into Wednesday′s match-up with Saint Vincent. The familiar surroundings were not enough for Geneva to end the skid as the Bearcats defeated Geneva by the count of 90-76. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 3-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference while Saint Vincent improved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the PAC.
The Bearcats took an early first half lead and never looked back. In fact, Geneva never led in the game and could not rally back against a very hot shooting Saint Vincent club. The Bearcats opened the game by jumping out to a 17-9 lead seven minutes into the game. The lead swelled to as many as 13 in the first half before Saint Vincent took a 40-30 lead into the halftime locker room.
Geneva pulled to within seven points on a Jacob Jaros lay-up with 9:34 left in the second half but could get no closer as Saint Vincent scored five of the next six points. The Bearcats were sizzling from the field all night and finished the game with a mark of 60% from the field. Geneva also shot the ball well at 48% but the Golden Tornadoes struggled from the foul line to the tune of 10-21.
Matt Lorello led the offense with 21 points on 9-13 shooting while Lambros Svingos added 17 points. Drew Santarsiero was the only other Geneva player to reach double figures with 13 points. Dave Phillips, who was honored prior to the game for reaching 1000 career points, was held to seven points on 3-14 shooting.
Geneva will try to end its five game losing streak on Saturday afternoon when he faces Washington & Jefferson before taking to the road for three straight.
