New Wilmington, PA - In what could have been an impressive road victory for Geneva and an impressive debut for the Golden Tornadoes′ newest player turned out to be a heartbreaking loss in the 206th edition of Geneva vs. Westminster. The Titans survived an 82-81 overtime decision against Geneva for their first victory in ten tries. The Golden Tornadoes dropped to 4-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
In a see-saw battle throughout the second half, Geneva had a chance to win the game in regulation. Leading by two points, Geneva fouled the Titans Doug Smith as he attempted a three-point shot. Smith missed the first two free throws giving the Golden Tornadoes a chance to steal the game away with only three seconds to play. Smith missed the third free throw intentionally and teammate Ron Martino followed the miss with a put back to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Geneva may have never taken a late second half lead if it were not for an impressive debut by senior Keynon Jackson. Jackson, who was playing his first game for Geneva after transferring to College Hill in January, scored the last 11 points of regulation and finished with a team high 19 points on 8-10 shooting from the field. Jackson′s heroics were not enough as Westminster found a way to get a victory in overtime.
Geneva′s last ditch effort by Matt Lorello in the paint was knocked away as Westminster came up with a steal and only its third win of the season and second in PAC play.
In addition to Jackson′s 19 points, Lorello finished the night with 14 points and Drew Santarsiero added 13 points. Trevor York came off the bench to provide Geneva with ten points and six rebounds. In what was the most productive night for Geneva′s bench all season, the non-starters scored 59 of Geneva′s 81 points.
The Golden Tornadoes head to Kentucky over the weekend to battle Thomas More on Saturday afternoon before returning home next Wednesday to face Bethany College at 7:30 pm.
