Berea, OH - Geneva College opened its men′s and women′s indoor track season on Friday afternoon and evening when it competed at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Meet. It didn′t take long for several student-athletes to hit mid-season form as the day was highlighted by 11 top ten finishes for the Golden Tornadoes including three NCCAA national qualifying performances and one new school record.

Eight of the top ten finishes came in women′s action. In fact, three of those top ten efforts came in one event. Teammates Katherine Michalak and Kathryn Regalado finished fourth and fifth respectively in the shot pu and both qualified for the NCCAA national indoor meet in February. Michalak finished with a fourth place distance of 36-02.25 while Regalado posted 36-00.25. Bethany Podnar rounded out the top ten with a throw of 30-01.50.

Liz Michalak turned in a pair of top ten performances with solid efforts in the 200 meter dash (10th) and long jump (14-10.75). In the distance events, Anna Kluitenberg (7th) turned in a time of 5:52.48 in the one mile event. Alayna Merckle finished 7th and Emily Hoobler 10th in the 3000 meter event.

It was the distance runners on the men′s team that stole the show in the opening meet of the season. Junior Nick Edinger picked right up where he left off a year ago with a record performance in his first race of the new year. Edinger placed fourth with a school record time of 9:00.95 in the 3000 meter race to qualify for the NCCAA national meet for the third consecutive year. In the 5000 meter event, Jacob Beschner finished third and Charles Parker fourth to round out the day.

Geneva will be back in action on February 4th when both the men′s and women′s teams will compete at the University Of Mount Union.
