Morgantown, WV - It may seem a bit odd that several schools from the Presidents′ Athletic Conference chose to get together at the West Virginia University Blue-Gold Indoor Meet to compete. Odd as it may be, the Geneva College men′s and women′s team proved to be on solid ground in a meet that featured four schools from the PAC.
Highlighting the results were five more student-athletes that qualified for the NCCAA national meet next weekend. Liz Michalak, who posted a pair of top ten performances, managed to qualify in the high jump with a distance of 1.45 meters. She also placed third in the long jump. Sister Katherine Michalak, who is already qualified in the shot put, placed second in that event with a mark of 11.44 meters. Teammates Kathryn Regalado (fourth) and Bethany Podnar (ninth) also had solid outings.
In other highlights on the women′s side, Jamie Mahan took home first place in the 500 meter dash with a winning time of 1:29.30. Anna Kluitenberg finished fifth in the 800 meter race before taking sixth place in the one mile run. The 3000 meter event was highlighted by Alayna Merkle′s third place overall finish.
A total of four male student-athletes became new NCCAA national qualifiers on Friday evening. Stephen Polite and Mark Filtz finished second and third respectively in the long jump and both posted qualifying times. Filtz also finished fourth in the long jump. Rick Truesdell became an NCCAA national qualifier for the first time with his fourth place finish in the shot put on a throw of 12.46 meters. Teammate Matt Logan finished seventh in the same event.
Nick Agostinelli was Geneva′s final qualifier with an impressive showing in the 60 meter dash. After finishing fifth overall in the preliminary round, Agostinelli placed fourth in the finals with a time of 7.30. Josh Guiser and Wes Marquis finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 200 meter event while Chez Anderson and Lon Hambrice crossed the line fifth and sixth in the 800 meter race. Owen Struck performed very well and place second overall in the one mile run with teammate Charles Parker crossing the line in the fifth overall spot. Other top ten performances included both Will Pinson and Richard Louther in the 3000 meter event.
Geneva′s national qualifiers will take the stage at the NCCAA indoor track and field meet next Saturday at Cedarville University.
