Latrobe, PA - Saint Vincent College is not exactly the perfect place for the Geneva College men′s basketball team to try and turn things around in a season that has been nothing short of a struggle. Latrobe has always been a difficult place for Geneva to find victories and on Saturday evening the trend continued. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a 76-56 decision to the Bearcats and fell to 5-17 on the season including a 4-10 mark in the PAC. The loss also dropped Geneva into a tie with Westminster for the sixth and seventh seed in the standings. Meanwhile, Saint Vincent kept pace with the top half of the conference and moved to 11-3 in league play which is currently good enough for fourth place just ½ game out of the second spot.
Geneva led briefly in the first half but Saint Vincent took control early and never looked back in completing the season sweep against the Golden Tornadoes. The Bearcats have now defeated Geneva in four straight games dating back to 2010.
Geneva′s final lead of the game came at 11-10 but Saint Vincent scored seven consecutive points to grab a six point lead. Saint Vincent held a 14 point lead on four separate occasions in the first half before settling for a 41-28 lead at the break. The distinct difference came in bench scoring as the Bearcats posted 20 points to Geneva′s two from its reserves in the first half. Geneva could never get the deficit into single digits as Saint Vincent cruised in the second half.
Matt Lorello led Geneva with 16 points as Keynon Jackson added 15 on 5-7 shooting and eight rebounds. Lambros Svingos was Geneva′s only other double digit scorer with 13 points. Dave Phillips was held scoreless for just the third time in his four year career and only the first since his freshman year. The Bearcats featured a balanced attack with Dennis Bassich leading the way with 15 points.
Geneva will step out of conference play on Monday night when it hosts Penn State Beaver at 7:30 pm. The Golden Tornadoes travel to W & J on Wednesday before returning for the regular season finale on Saturday night against Westminster in a game that could decide the sixth place seed in the PAC tournament in two weeks.
