Alliance, PA - If Zola Bud could do it, then why not Emily Hoobler? Hoobler proved that tennis shoes are just a formality when it comes to running the 5000 meter race. Hoobler highlighted a solid day at the Mount Union "John Homon" Open by her shoeless performance in the 5000 meter event. When her shoe got stepped on and came off, Hoobler was forced to run with only one shoe. After a while, she realized her stride would be better suited by removing the one remaining shoe. Running the majority of the race barefoot, Hoobler finished 11th overall and just six seconds off of a personal best at 19:08.37.
Some other top performances where turned in by Geneva athletes, each of which decided to go through their respective events with two shoes securely on their feet. Nick Edinger continued his solid season with a first place finish in the men′s 5000 race while Nick Agostinelli finished fourth in the 100 meter event before joining teammates Aaron Marga, Stephen Polite and Josh Guiser for a third place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Marga also turned in a personal best time of 11.61 in the 100 meter race.
Also in men′s action, Mark Filitz was third in the triple jump and Tyler French had an outdoor personal best in the shot put at 45-04.
In women′s highlights, Liz Michalak had a busy day with top five finishes in the high jump, long jump and javelin. Little sister Katherine Michalak won the shot put event with a distance of 38-05. Teammates Kathryn Regalado (3rd) and Sara Williams (9th) also performed well in the shot put. Shannon Rech took home first place in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a mark of 12:21 with teammate Anna Kluitenberg finishing third in the same event.
Geneva is just three weeks away from hosting the PAC championships. Next Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes head to New Wilmington for a meet at Westminster College.
