Greenville, PA - Having more errors than hits in a doubleheader is not exactly the recipe for success. On Saturday, the Geneva College softball team combined poor defense with quiet bats in a pair of losses at Thiel College. Geneva dropped game one 3-2 before falling 11-0 in the night cap. The sweep dropped Geneva′s overall record to 18-14 while it fell to 6-4 in the PAC.
Despite doing very little at the plate, the Golden Tornadoes found a way to take a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning of game one. Geneva took advantage of two Thiel miscues to put the first runs on the board and stake Julie DiLonardo to a 2-0 lead. The game remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. An RBI groundout cut the lead in half before a base hit found its way through the Geneva outfield and plating the eventual game winning runs. The three-run sixth would close out the scoring as Geneva managed only three hits in the game. DiLonardo took the hard luck loss allowing just one earned run. She gave up six hits and struck out seven.
Game two also turned on a defensive miscue. With the game scoreless in the fourth inning, Thiel loaded the bases with two outs. A harmless pop-up went untouched behind third base that resulted in a two runs. The Tomcats added three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to open up their 11-0 lead in a game that ended after six innings due to the mercy rule. Geneva′s bats were again held silent with just two singles in the night cap.
The Golden Tornadoes will host the Houghton College in a four-game series on Monday and Tuesday to determine the NCCAA East Regional champion. Total run differential will determine the regional champion and that team will receive and automatic bid to the NCCAA nationals in May. Geneva will get back into conference play on Wednesday when it hosts first place Westminster at 3:30 pm.
