Geneva Rebounds For Split at Grove City

Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College baseball team took three-game series against Grove City by rebounding for a doubleheader split on Saturday. After dropping game one 10-3, the Golden Tornadoes came back for an 8-5 victory in the night cap to take two out of three from the Wolverines over the weekend. The split pushed Geneva′s record to 14-16 overall and 8-10 in the conference.

After spotting Grove City a run in the top of the first of game one, the Golden Tornadoes came back with a two-spot in the second inning. Garrett Swanson and Jeremy Herzog each had RBI′s to put Geneva on top. T.J. Lambert′s second home run of the season put Geneva up 3-1 in the third but the Wolverines exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Mike Jeffreys and Swanson each had two hits in Geneva′s eight hit attack. Caleb Kilgore started for Geneva and went 3.1 innings allowing six hits and five earned runs in taking the loss.

In game two, Geneva scored in each of the first four innings to open up an 8-0 lead before Grove City tried to rally back. Jon Bushmire had an RBI single in the first to put Geneva on top. Mike Jeffreys hit a two run homer before another Lambert RBI single put the Golden Tornadoes on top 4-0. Noah Medich′s two-run double in the third inning stretched the lead to 6-0. Adam Scheiderer and Bushmire each had RBI doubles in the fourth to give Geneva a comfortable 8-0 lead. The Wolverines scored four in the fifth and another in the seventh but could not complete the comeback.

Mike Jeffreys earned the victory with 4.2 innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on four hits while striking out seven. Joel Gatti came on to earn a save with 2.1 innings of relief work. Gatti allowed one earned run on three hits.

Geneva finished game two with ten hits including three from Gatti and two each from Jeffreys and Bushmire.

The Golden Tornadoes will head to Kentucky next weekend for a three-game series against Thomas More that begins on Friday.
