Beaver Falls, PA- In two weeks, Geneva College and the Golden Tornadoes′ track and field team will be hosting the Presidents′ Athletic Conference track and field championships. On Tuesday, Geneva College hosted its first track meet in three years as it welcomed PAC foes Thiel, Westminster and Grove City in the PAC Quad North meet as a precursor to the championships.
Geneva′s men and women finished third out of the four schools but posted some outstanding individual efforts throughout the afternoon. Nick Agostinelli is one of the few Geneva College track athletes that had competed at Merriman Athletic Complex in the last two years. Agostinelli, a Beaver Falls High School product, competed for the Tigers on Geneva′s campus. On Tuesday, Agostinelli looked right at home with a first place finish in the 100 meter race. Posting a personal best time of 11.23, Agostinelli took home the top prize for the Golden Tornadoes.
In other highlights for the men′s team, Tyler French posted a personal best 47-08.5 to win the shot put event. Geneva′s Matt Logan and Rick Truesdell finished fourth and fifth in the same event. Nick Edinger defeated all other college athletes in the 1500 meter event with a time of 4:06.80. The only person that defeated Edinger was Geneva sprints coach and Golden Tornado alum Chris Thompson.
Geneva′s women posted several highlight performances on Tuesday. Kathryn Regalado won the shot put and the discus events. In the shot, Regalado won with a distance of 38-10.25 before throwing 118-06 to win the discus. Katherine Michalak finished third in the shot and Mary Keen was second in the discus.
Emily Hoobler ran a sub-19 in the 5K with a big personal best performance good enough for second place. Heidi Steiner finished third in the 1500 meter event just one second off of an NCCAA qualifying time. Teammate Alayna Merkle finished second in the 1500 meter race with a mark of 4:59.22.
Geneva′s all-around athlete Liz Michalak was all over the track and field on Tuesday. Michalak competed in six events and compiled 30 points for the Golden Tornadoes. She posted a first place finish in the high jump with a personal best distance of 5-00.25. She then finished second in the long jump, third in the javelin and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 17.78. As if that wasn′t enough, she anchored both the 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 relay helping the Golden Tornadoes finish third in both events.
The Golden Tornadoes will now set their sights on the conference championships on April 27-28.
