Each year, the Geneva College Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards hosts a reception for award nominees, their parents and directors of participating high school productions.

"Being nominated for a Mancini trophy is a high honor, considering the hundreds of students from 14 different schools who have participated in musical theatre shows in this competition," says Louise Copeland, a professor of music at Geneva and coordinator of the Mancini Awards. "We are happy to highlight and congratulate and honor these individuals who have shown outstanding ability in the arts."

During the Nominees Reception, nominees receive certificates and are part of a photography session. In addition, this year′s reception includes improvisation performances as well as a performance by the 2011 recipients of best actor and best actress, John Michael Taormina of Quigley Catholic High School and Bethany Menjivar of Ambridge Area High School.

Taormina and Menjivar were the first Mancini award winners to attend the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) in New York City last summer. While there, they rehearsed and attended private and master classes with theater professionals for seven days.

As a Participating Awards Program of the NHSMTA, Geneva′s Mancini Awards sends a best actor and best actress recipient to New York City, all expenses paid. Through the program, students have the opportunity to earn merit scholarships, obtain professional advancement and receive other prizes.

The Mancini Nominees Reception will be Wednesday, May 9 from 7-9 p.m. in Alexander Hall.

The Geneva College Henry Mancini Theatre Awards are scheduled for the following week, Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse.
