The Geneva College community will join together this Friday, August 31 at 10:10 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse for the annual event to kick off the new school year, Academic Convocation.

During the convocation, first-year students are welcomed to Geneva. This is the first time they will march as a class. The next and final time will be when the class of 2016 graduates.

Also, academic achievements among the college faculty are honored. Two awards are given out every year—Excellence in Teaching, as determined by Geneva students, and Excellence in Scholarship, determined by Geneva faculty. Dean of Faculty and Administration Terri Williams will announce the winners.

Last year, Dr. Terry Thomas, Professor of Biblical Studies, received the Excellence in Teaching Award and Dr. Esther Meek, Professor of Philosophy, received the Excellence in Scholarship Award.

First-year students attending the convocation should meet in the Merriman Gym at 9:45 a.m. All students who attend will receive chapel credit.
