Beaver Falls, PA - In a match that started in sunlight on the outside courts of Brady′s Run Park, Geneva and Washington & Jefferson were forced to finish their match on the inside courts because of a frantic Geneva College comeback that came up just short. Geneva dropped a 5-4 decision to the President′s but not before giving them a major scare. Geneva fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the PAC while W & J improved to 2-1 in conference play.
Washington & Jefferson looked to have things well in control after sweeping all three doubles matches and then cruising to a straight set victory in #1 singles. Needing just one more victory in the five remaining singles matches, Washington & Jefferson nearly didn′t get what it needed. Geneva began a frantic comeback with singles victories by Samantha Jensen, Christine Bullock and Alison Beattie. For the third straight match, Alyssa Kuhn rallied from way down in the first set for yet another straight set victory. When Kuhn′s victory became official, the match was tied at 4-4. The only remaining and deciding match was at number four singles and it appeared that W & J would get its victory after Brittany Kress dropped her first set 6-1. The junior came roaring back like the rest of her teammates and took the second set 6-0. After three games of the third and final set, the match ran out of sunlight and the conclusion was moved indoors.
Washington & Jefferson was able to finally close out the match with a 6-1 victory in the third and deciding set of number four singles. As for Geneva, it will head south for the weekend in hopes of turning things around. Geneva will play Franklin College on the campus of Thomas More on Friday before facing off against the Saints in a PAC match on Saturday morning. Geneva returns home a week from Thursday to take on Waynesburg at 4 pm.
