Bethany, WV - Two things happened to the Geneva College women′s volleyball team on Saturday that hasn′t happened in quite some time. The Golden Tornadoes lost a pair of matches on the same day and extended their overall losing streak to three matches. Geneva dropped a 3-1 decision to host Bethany College to open the day before falling 3-1 to Thiel College in match number two. The doubleheader loss dropped Geneva back to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Geneva lost more matches on Saturday in conference play than it had all season in 2011. The Golden Tornadoes, which finished the 2011 season with a 17-1 regular season conference record, won their first PAC title and did so by upending Bethany College in the conference final. The Bison were able to get some revenge on Saturday as they handed Geneva its first of two conference losses.
Geneva fell to Bethany by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 in the first match of the day. After pulling even at one game apiece with a victory in set number two, the Golden Tornadoes watched Bethany win the final two sets of the match. Maggie Bowersox led the offense with 14 kills while Ashley Davis added ten kills. Deanna Briody led the team in both assists with 37 and digs with 17. Kristland McCracken added 16 digs on the defensive end of the floor.
In the night cap with Thiel, Geneva came out quickly and took the first set 25-21 but quickly fell in set two by the count of 25-12. Thiel took a close third set 25-23 before closing out the match with a 25-17 in the fourth and deciding set. Bowersox and Davis each had 11 kills while McCracken chipping in with ten but it certainly wasn′t enough for Geneva to reverse its fortunes.
The Golden Tornadoes will get back in the gym on Monday to prepare for Wednesday night′s home match with Westminster as they try to get back on the winning track in an effort to defend their PAC crown.
