Geneva′s campus rang with the battle cries of students engaged in competition on the weekend of September 7 and 8. The Covenanter Cup, won from a combination of games ranging from Scrabble to Nine-Square to Wii Bowling, was awarded late Saturday afternoon to Young North and Young East, the male and female contingents from Young Hall.
After a heady Friday evening battle at Reeves Field that included Frisbee, Wii bowling and a lot of shouting, Young Hall emerged with 350 points for both of its teams, although Geneva Arms trailed by only 10 points.
The struggle resumed on Saturday afternoon in the Metheny Fieldhouse due to overcast skies. Even more events packed that day, from the cerebral choices such as Sudoku and Scrabble to the more active Twister and Nine-Square, and even the graceful and ever-popular Waterless Synchronized Swimming event. An intense volleyball game took place on the basketball court during the afternoon, and was followed by the final event: a vast sword-fighting game overseen by Dagorhir, the college′s medieval reenactment society. Strains of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack accompanied the foam-sword carnage.
Residence halls, houses and apartments all gathered into a total of 10 teams: five male teams from Young Hall, Geneva Arms, Pearce, Memorial and the residence houses; and five female teams from Young Hall, Geneva Arms, McKee, Clarke and the residence houses. Commuters participated on the teams from the residence houses.
The 2012 Covenanter Cup was the second occurrence of the now-annual event, which originated from Director of Residence Life Neil Best, and which was won last year by Clarke Hall. Participants and faculty look forward to next year′s mêlée.
