Waynesburg, PA - For most of the first half, the Geneva College women′s soccer team had things going in the right direction. In perhaps the most important match for the women′s program in a few years, the Golden Tornadoes were unable to hand on o an early 2-0 lead and dropped a 3-2 decision to Waynesburg University. The two teams came into the match battling for the fourth spot in the PAC standings. The post-season tournament only includes four teams and with only two weeks left of the regular season; Wednesday night′s match would go a long way in determining the fourth and final spot. With the loss, Geneva dropped back to the .500 mark with a 7-7-1 overall record and a 3-3 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Waynesburg improved to 4-2 within the PAC.
The Mann sisters got Geneva off and running in the first half as both sisters found the net with first half goals. Elise Mann opened the scoring with a marker in the 27th minute with an assist going to Karmyn Culbertson. Nine minutes later, it was Heidi Mann′s turn to find the net as she scored off a feed from Risa Tillman to give the Golden Tornadoes a 2-0 advantage. Geneva nearly made it to the halftime break with a two goal advantage but the Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half with just two minutes remaining in the first period.
Waynesburg tied the game with a goal in the 59th minute and would get the eventual game winner with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Waynesburg controlled the ball possession and field position in the second half. For the game, Waynesburg out shot Geneva 18-11 including ten shots on goal. Geneva′s Anna McMullen turned away seven shots in the match but it was not enough to lift Geneva to the winner′s circle.
The Golden Tornadoes can put Wednesday′s loss in the past with a big effort against Grove City on Saturday. Geneva will host a very good Wolverines team at Merriman Complex for a homecoming kick-off of 11 am. The regular season concludes next week with a home matches against Chatham on Wednesday and Thiel next Saturday.
