Grove City, PA - The Geneva College women′s volleyball team closed out the 2012 regular season on Saturday with a conference victory over Grove City and a non-conference loss to Allegheny. The day started with a 3-0 victory over the Wolverines that closed out the PAC schedule with a 13-5 league record. The Golden Tornadoes ended the day with a 3-0 loss to Allegheny that pushed their regular season record to 22-10.

Geneva needed to win its final conference match of the season to ensure a first round home play-off match next week. With the victory over Grove City, the Golden Tornadoes will now open post-season play on Tuesday at home against Westminster at 7 pm. Geneva defeated Westminster twice this season with the most recent five-set victory coming last week.

Grove City nearly took the first set on Saturday but Geneva rallied back from a 23-20 deficit in that first set to steal a 28-26 win. Geneva won the second and third set handily by scores of 25-20 and 25-14. Maggie Bowersox was nearly unstoppable with a hitting percentage over .500 in the opening match. She had a team best 15 kills with just one error. She also picked up four blocks for the defense. Ashley Davis finished with ten kills while Paige Banyas was very effective on the service line with four aces. Deanna Briody had 37 assists and Alex Baughman led the defense with 11 digs.

Geneva featured several new faces in the line-up in the match against Allegheny. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a three-set match by scores of 24-26, 23-25, 14-25. Ashley Hartge led the offense with 11 kills with Rachel Netherland checking in with nine kills and Sarah Ormsby picked up eight. Lynsey Gugino led the team with 32 assists while also picking up 14 digs. Ashlyn Mathoslah led the defense with 17 digs in the loss.

Geneva finished the regular season in fourth place in the PAC and will face fifth seed Westminster on Tuesday night. The winner of that match will advance to the PAC final four which will be held next weekend at top seed Thomas More College. Should Geneva advance on Tuesday it would take on the top seed Saints on Friday night.
