On October 27, Geneva College′s Music Department sponsored five voice students who performed at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Tri-State Chapter auditions at West Virginia University. These students study at the voice studios of Professor Louise Copeland and Dr. David Kenneth Smith, who serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the NATS chapter.

Junior Ian Taylor of Rochester (Voice Performance/Music Business) took first prize in the Upper Level Musical Theater Men classification; Junior Elise Lundy of Beaver Falls (Voice Performance) placed third in the Junior Women classification; and Junior Isaac Fritsch of Baden (Music Business) and Sophomore Justin Addicott of Enon Valley (Music Education) advanced to the final round in a four-way tie among Junior Men, and both received Honorable Mention; Junior Elizabeth Dykshoorn of Bad Axe, Michigan (Music Education) brought her performing up to a new level, without advancing.

The singers were accompanied by Dr. Smith′s wife Marie Libal-Smith, who serves as adjunct piano faculty at Geneva and Westminster colleges.

The four finalists performed in a winners recital heard by all contestants and professors in attendance.

"Isaac sang his Elixir aria ‘Quanto è bella,′ Justin charmed everyone with Quilter′s ‘O Mistress Mine,′ Elise dazzled us with the Faust ‘Jewel Song,′ and Ian held all entranced with the Phantom of the Opera's ‘Music of the Night,′" said Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith congratulated the performers, saying that each brought honor to Geneva through their talent and effort.

"The NATS Auditions are a great opportunity for our students to perform and hear their peers in the region, and match their wits and talents against them," he added. "Because of the prominence of the universities and magnet arts schools in the area, the competition can be particularly fierce."
