Crestview Hills, KY - The surroundings were all too familiar for the Geneva College men′s soccer team. For the second straight year, the Golden Tornadoes traveled to Thomas More for the Presidents′ Athletic Conference championship. After dropping an overtime heartbreaker a year ago, Geneva fell to the four-time defending champions 2-0 in the 2012 final for another disappointing conclusion to the PAC season.
The Golden Tornadoes were trying to build off of momentum from Wednesday night′s semi-final shoot-out victory over Grove City but the offense was once again silent. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer on Wednesday, Geneva′s offense was again unable to generate much in terms of quality chances and was shut-out for the second straight game. Geneva managed only one shot on goal for the match and was outshot 12-8 for the game.
Neither team could find the net in the first half as the teams went to the halftime break knotted in a scoreless tie. The Saints came out with a purpose in the second half and got the icebreaker just three minutes into the second stanza. Kyle Troutman scored the first of his two goals for what would end up being the game winner. Troutman scored again 12 minutes later for some insurance that Thomas More would not need.
Bryan Butler made three saves but picked up the loss as Thomas More′s Matt Kees won for the 13th time this year. Geneva ended the day with an overall record of 9-6-4 while Thomas More improved to 13-3-4 with one of those losses coming to Geneva in Beaver Falls earlier in the season.
The Golden Tornadoes will now turn their attention to the NCCAA regional tournament and the possibility of getting back to the NCCAA nationals where they finished second overall a year ago. The East regional tournament times and dates are yet to be determined but should be ironed out early next week.
