Houghton, NY - After suffering through a six-win season in 2011, the Golden Tornadoes women′s soccer team turned their fortunes around in 2012 by finishing the campaign with a 9-9-1 overall mark. The 2012 season came to an abrupt end on Friday afternoon with a 7-1 loss to Houghton College in the NCCAA East regional semi-finals. The Golden Tornadoes watched a Houghton team explode early and was never able to recover.

The host Highlanders scored just 29 seconds into the match and never looked back. Houghton continued the early on-slaught with five goals in the first 20 minutes of the match including a pair of goals just 35 seconds apart less than 15 minutes into the match.

Prior to halftime, Geneva got its only goal of the game and to nobody′s surprise it came off the foot of freshman Heidi Mann. Mann completed her record breaking freshman season with 18 goals, which was a new freshman single season scoring record. Mann′s unassisted goal at the 27 minute mark gave Geneva a bit of momentum but it was too little, too late.

Houghton added two more second half goals at the 52nd and 74th minutes to put the game away. The Highlanders outshot Geneva 21-6 for the match including a 13-4 margin in the first stanza. Anna McMullen made seven saves in the final match of her impressive freshman season.

Houghton will move on to the regional championship match on Saturday to determine the automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament in two weeks.
