Mt. Vernon, OH - In 2011, the Geneva College men′s soccer team lost in the PAC title game to Thomas More before making an impressive run all the way to NCCAA national runner up. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes started their NCCAA post-season journey on the right foot with a 2-1 victory at Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the East regional quarter-finals. The victory pushed Geneva′s overall record to 10-6-4 and earned it a trip to the semi-final round, which will most likely be at Houghton College next Friday.

Teddy Krzywiecki broke a scoreless tie when he took a cross from Jeb Nash and fired the game′s first goal from 12 yards out midway through the first half. Prior to the first half whistle, David Gerlach was knocked down in the penalty area on a Geneva corner kick. The foul resulted in a penalty kick and Nash made no mistake extending Geneva′s lead to 2-0.

The Cougars cut the Geneva lead in half ten minutes into the second half making the score 2-1 but it then turned into Bryan Butler time as Geneva′s sophomore goalkeeper turned away several shots in helping to maintain Geneva′s one goal advantage.

Geneva managed to pick up its tenth victory of the season and will now look to move past its next two opponents to earn its second consecutive trip to the NCCAA regionals. The East region seedings are not officially set but it will most likely be Geneva facing host and top seed Houghton with Nyack and Roberts Wesleyan playing in the second semi-final next Friday. The Regional champion will be crowned next Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCCAA nationals on the first weekend in December.
