Pittsburgh, PA - The calendar turned to December today but for the Geneva College women′s basketball team the results stayed the same. After dropping all five games to start the season in November, the Golden Tornadoes opened the new month with an 83-71 loss at Chatham to fall to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. For the Cougars, it was their first victory of the season in six tries.
The good news for Geneva is that they posted the highest offensive output of the season by 15 points. The bad news is that after allowing just an average of 47 points through the first four non-conference games of the year, Geneva has now allowed an average of 80.5 points in its first two conference games of the season.
Chatham opened up a 26-11 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half. The Golden Tornadoes made a frantic comeback and by the halftime break trailed by only two points at 35-33. Geneva never gained the lead in the second half. Trailing by just three points at 47-44 with 13:12 remaining in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes watched Chatham score 18 of the next 19 points to open up a 20 point advantage at 65-45 with 6:27 to play in the game. Twice Geneva rallied to cut the deficit into single digits but it was too little, too late.
The Golden Tornadoes could not contain the Cougars duo of Rachel McClain and Becky Rowe. McClain scored 29 points and Rowe added 25 in the victory. For Geneva, freshman Heidi Mann scored a season best 20 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. Leah Prisuta was a perfect 7-7 from the foul line and finished with 15 points in the game. Samantha Fisher posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds in a losing cause.
Geneva will travel to Bethany College on Wednesday in search of its first victory of the season. The Golden Tornadoes′ 0-6 start is the slowest since a 0-8 start in 1988. Geneva returns home next Saturday evening at 5:30 pm for the conference home opener against Waynesburg University.
