Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva head women′s basketball coach Lori Wynn and assistant coach Ashley Dupler will have a smiles on the faces come Christmas. The coaching duo helped lead Geneva to its first victory of the season on Saturday with a 64-55 decision over Houghton College. What makes the initial victory of the season even sweeter for the Geneva coaching staff is that both are graduates of Houghton College. The victory pushed Geneva′s overall record to 1-8 while Houghton, the NCCAA′s eighth ranked team in the nation, fell to 4-3 on the season.
Geneva trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half as the Highlanders went out to a 20-8 lead just eight minutes into the game. The Golden Tornadoes battled back and Heidi Mann′s lay-up as time expired in the first half cut the lead to just three points at 33-30.
The Golden Tornadoes took their first lead of the second half at the 12:21 mark on a three-pointer from Leah Prisuta that made the score 42-41. Geneva would never again relinquish the lead as a 12-0 run pushed the lead to 47-41 at the 10:55 mark. Houghton cut the lead to two points with 7:50 remaining but Geneva would score the next seven points to ultimately put the game away.
Geneva did an outstanding job in protecting the basketball as it committed just eight turnovers for the game while forcing 22 turnovers from Houghton. The Golden Tornadoes shot 36% from the field for the game that included a 5-11 mark from outside three point range. Heidi Mann led Geneva with 20 points while Leah Prisuta posted 16 and Chelsea D′Urso added 14 in the victory. Bri Cowden came off the bench to score 11 points in what was a very well balanced Geneva offensive attack.
The Golden Tornadoes have earned two weeks off as they will not be back in action again until hosting a two-day tournament on December 28-29. Houghton College will return to Metheny Fieldhouse but Geneva will not meet the Highlanders. Geneva will face Wooster and Franciscan in the two-day event before getting back into conference play on January 2nd against Thomas More.
