Creating Opportunities for Ministry by Pursuing Action through Student Service-or COMPASS Club-is Geneva College's newest student-led effort on campus. Founded by senior public relations major Chris Strangfeld, the group seeks specifically to build community on Geneva's campus through direct action.

To accomplish their goal, COMPASS Club performs a one-hour service project once a week on campus. A short list of what they have done so far includes writing thank you letters to Physical Plant workers and President Smith, picking up trash around campus, cleaning the Bagpiper Theatre, and removing empty plates left on tables in Alexander Dining Hall.

"I think the COMPASS Club is doing some great things to enhance the Geneva experience, and working hard to engage students in leadership development initiatives," says Brian Jensen, Director of Student Leadership Development and advisor to the club.

Alongside the service projects, COMPASS Club also facilitates mentoring meetings between club officers and members. They have the ability to effectively accomplish this because of their officer-to-member ratio, which is 11 to 22. These meetings help to uncover member motivation and strengths. Each meeting ends with a weekly challenge to apply what they learned have about themselves.

"We try to take everything we learn and make it immediately applicable," says Strangfeld. "We now refer to it, thanks to Anna Harris, as 'being faithful in the moment.'"

Strangfeld thought of the COMPASS Club concept during his junior year and the organization formed during the fall 2012 semester.

"We seek to discover what God wants us to do," says Strangfeld. "It's an empowering feeling and the more we understand, the better we do."

Membership in COMPASS Club is currently through invitation in order to maintain a balanced officer-to-member ratio; however, students interested in getting involved may contact Strangfeld at chris.strangfeld@geneva.edu.

Geneva College invites students to accept the challenge of an academically excellent, Christ-centered education.
