Stand_low_res.jpgGeneva College students recently made a “stand for freedom”— literally. For 27 hours, volunteers took turns standing outside the Alexander Dining Hall to increase local awareness of human trafficking, and also to gather signatures for the International Justice Mission (IJM) petition. This petition, which will be sent to President Obama, calls for public officials to create active policies that will eliminate human trafficking in the United States.

“I'm encouraged that people are beginning to think about the issue,” says Sylvia Wright, junior communication disorders major and lead organizer of Stand for Freedom at Geneva. “People have signed up for every standing hour, and it's great to see people learning from the experience.”

Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world, which affects areas as close to Geneva as Pittsburgh. Every day, millions of men, women and children are forced into prostitution without any hope of escape.

Judith Campbell, a junior writing major, also had an encouraging experience. “It's great to walk away and continue standing in spirit. I'm looking forward to learning and being more aware of the concerns associated with human trafficking,” says Campbell.
