Geneva Wins Two in Home Opener

Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva softball team had to wait 12 days to play due to cold weather and snow. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes finally got the chance to open the home schedule against Hiram College and the wait turned out to be worth it. Geneva came away with a pair of victories by the scores of 5-3 and 5-4 in eight innings. The doubleheader sweep pushed Geneva′s overall record to 6-8.

Samantha Johnson pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory in game one. Johnson scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run for her fourth victory of the season. Andrea Hinds registered the final four outs to pick up her first save of the season. Geneva opened the scoring when Ashley Davis tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a Johnson ground out. Geneva pushed across four runs in the fifth highlighted by an RBI triple from Laura Beck and a run scoring single from Ashley Davis. Geneva finished with eight hits including two each from Davis and Elyssa Simko.

Game two turned out to be the Andrea Hinds show. Hinds pitched an eight-inning complete game for her second win of the season while also knocking in the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Dayna Hicks scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. After Hiram tied the game in the fifth, Hinds scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning. Hiram took its only lead of the game with three runs in the sixth inning but Geneva came right back to tie the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Laura Beck scored on a wild pitch and Samantha Johnson′s RBI ground out tied the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Hinds lined a single to centerfield to score Davis for the game winner. Hinds allowed three earned runs and struck out four to earn the victory. Hicks had three hits to lead Geneva′s 11-hit attack.

The Golden Tornadoes are scheduled to host Baldwin-Wallace on Monday weather permitting. The conference is set to get underway at Waynesburg on Thursday afternoon.
